Cooper's Hawk Family - Video
Video and Photos by Eric Howe

Thanks to a friend in Racine, I was able to capture some video of a Cooper's Hawk nest located in their neighbor's yard. The male Cooper's Hawk is an adult, but the female tending the nest is a
first-year bird. At the time of filming (22 June), the four young were approximately two weeks old based upon the finding of an egg shell under the nest tree on 07 June.

At the very beginning of this 5 minute video, the female Cooper's Hawk can be heard giving
"whaaa" calls. Adult females will give this call when flying to and receiving food from the male.

On 10 July, the two young Cooper’s Hawks were still being fed in the nest. However, they had both become branchers! The older one was first observed moving about on branches near the nest on 06 July. Two days later, the younger one with white fuzz on the top of the head left the nest and went straight to the canopy.

The young hawks have become vocal since they've left the nest,
"whistling" back and forth quite a bit.
With the 100F heat on 17 July, they had been fairly quiet.
