Spring is coming soon; but for today, it's a great day to bird by car!!

At 2:30 Wednesday afternoon I saw a flock of 7 Ross's Geese along with 7 Snow Geese where the Des Plaines River crosses County Trunk "N" in Paris Township, Kenosha Co. The river crosses "N" 1 mile east of Hwy. 45. "N" is about 2.0 miles south of Hwy. 142, or 2.5 miles north of Hwy. 50. "N" tees with 45 so turn east off of 45. The geese were on the north side of the road just east of the river in a flooded corn field. There is a patch of corn stubble closer to the road just east of the river, then a patch of ice, then NE of that ice is another patch of corn stubble. That is where the geese were.

The Purple Sandpiper, and the Dunlin, were present at Carre-Hogle Park in Racine around 11:00 A.M. today (Wed Dec 26). No funny gulls out on the ice though that I could see … just the usual two species. An accipiter, a sharpie by the looks of it, passed over the car as I was leaving, making what looked like a beeline for a neighborhood feeder. You get so used to seeing Cooper’s Hawks all year long in these urban settings that my initial cue for a Sharp-shinned is just that it looks … well, different. “Hey, that’s an accipiter, but it’s not a Cooper’s!” Well, probably not—I saw it for all of half a second.

There were very few gulls at the Slaty-backed Gull spot when I arrived about 9:30am, but the Purple Sandpiper was present. One Iceland Gull was observed flying in and sat for a few minutes out near the small group of gulls, but that was the only unusual gull present for the hour plus I was there. I got some decent photos of the Purple Sandpiper though:

I hope that Slaty-backed turns up somewhere nearby. I never made the decision to get up to see the one last year, so a more local bird would be a great thing.

Hi all,

I went back this morning to try to get pictures of the Purple Sandpiper and Dunlin on the algae maps at Carre-Hogle Park, I started looking to see if there were any rare gulls around. Immediately found an adult non-breeding Lesser Black-backed Gull. Upon a little further inspection, I saw another medium-large adult, non-breeding gull with a dark mantle. I was surprised to see that it had pink legs! The bird had very heavily streaked head (similar to the Menasha bird last winter). My friend Stephan was with me, and while he's not a birder, he said that the legs looked pink as well (and specifically not yellow, as could be compared with the Lesser). The bird had been standing in the water near a frozen patch in the lake and was slightly preening (I could see mirrors on P10 and P9). About the time Rick Fare came by, it flew over to the ice, put its head down and went to sleep. It was still present when I left about 11:30, though still sleeping. The Lesser Black-backed was not. Both shorebirds where.

However, they did fly out to the breakwater at one point, so if you go looking for them and do not find them right away, I would suggest waiting around a little bit. Good birding to all!

Hi fellow birders,

There is a Northern Shrike hanging out at the Pike River Trail which is located on Old Spring Street east of Stuart Road. (Maps show it as near Timmer Lane). The shrike was seen briefly on 12/20, and despite very dense fog, I did manage to find it again today for the Racine CBC.  Both days, the bird was on the west side of the trail, between the second bridge and the cornfield. He's rather wary....today he flew off just as I was getting my camera out. He stayed within sight, however, so I managed to get some distant photos in thick fog :(

There are also Am. Robins (11 today) hanging out in red berried trees just across the street from the trail's small parking area.

reported by John Dixon (and Rick Fare)

Purple Sandpiper

Rick Fare called me at about 10:00 this morning and said he had a Purple Sandpiper just out from the Lighthouse at Wind Point. He then lost sight of it and didn't relocate it until about 11:15 at which time he called me back. I made it into town just before 12:30, and with Rick sticking around to keep an eye on the bird until I got there, I was able to spot it about 100-150 yards north of the jetty which is north and around the corner from the Shoop Park parking lot. After we watched it for about 45 minutes it flew to the rocks at the end of the mentioned jetty. The bird is rather nervous for a Purple Sandpiper and flies around quite a bit. Rick saw it in 2 or 3 different places between the light house and the jetty before I arrived. It has an injured right leg so maybe that's why it is nervous.
